Reading teaching plays an important role in our middle school English education. However, traditional English reading instruction tends to be word for word reading, ignoring the content and background of the reading material. This phenomenon results inthe low efficiency of reading teaching, and also leads to the high school students lackingthe ability in language expression. Promulgated in2001, Full-time CompulsoryEducation English Curriculum Standards (experimental version) newly adds the topiccapacity to the requirements of language knowledge, and its2011version keeps it as arequirement. Moreover, the2011version detailed the targets of topic-capacity-building inAppendix IV.
