With the development of economic globalization, English,as one of the most widely usedlanguage,is becoming the most important tool in international communication. Englishteaching was introduced into China more than a century ago. In the fall of2001, China’sMinistry of Education officially issued the "Full-time Compulsory Education EnglishCurriculum Standards (Trial version)"(hereinafter referred to as "the English CurriculumStandards"). From then on, the English curriculum has been widely applied all over China.The new English Curriculum Standards reflects a new education philosophy and maintainssome striking features. Firstly, it lays emphasis on ability-oriented education, student-centeredclass and the teaching process accessment. Secondly, it also focuses on creating fun andrespecting the students’ individual differences in the learning process. Thirdly, it highlightsthe students’ personal participation, develops curriculum resources, and expands the students’learning channels. All these would be more suitable for primary and secondary schoolstudents in China.Owning to the above, how to carry on effective teaching and realize the smoothtransition from primary schools to secondary schools of different levels under the EnglishCurriculum Standards is a must for English teachers’ further study.Based on the new English curriculum standards and social constructivist theory, and alsobased on years’ of teaching experience, this dissertation attempts to analyze the convergenceproblems in the transition from primary school to secondary school systematically throughvarious research methods, such as literature analysis, questionnaire, observation, etc. Itchooses Xingtai Jinhua Primary School and Xingtai Jinhua Secondary School as its studyobject and puts forward some instructive ideas on the following aspects. The problems are:1.there are some differences in teaching aims, tasks, contents, methods and assessment toteachers;2. there are also some differences in learning psychology, interests, habits, methodsand skills among students. The practical countermeasures are:1. more attention should bepaid to the coherence of teaching aims, tasks, content and methods;2. more emphasis shouldbe made on the students’ learning psychology, interests, habits, methods and skills.Convergence problems are a major issue that may affect the teaching quality directly. How to solve them is not only a hot issue in teaching reform but also a challenge to educators.To solve the problems scientifically and systematically will undoubtedly promote the Englishteaching level and improve the students’ all-round ability. What’s more, it will also greatlyenhance the advancement of English education of Xingtai.
