With the rapid development of economy and technology in the modern society, multimedia gradually has been adopted in the classes within decades. Teachers need to create appropriate learning situation to promote students’learning in the real situation. There is no doubt that multimedia application in the English classroom is an inevitable trend. However, what is the current situation of multimedia application in primary school English teaching? What is the effect of multimedia application? Are the students as well as all the teachers willing to accept this teaching method?To answer the above questions, this paper first aims to make a thorough investigation on the effectiveness of the primary English classroom teaching based on the theories:the Krashen’s Language Acquisition Theory, the Constructivist Theory and the Learning Theory of Humanism. Take the case of Meiling Primary School, this paper also conducts an experimental study that is about the teaching effectiveness of the two classes of grade five in Meiling Primary School. There are two classes involved in this study: class one, called the experimental class, applies the multimedia assisted English teaching and class two, the control class, applies the traditional English teaching mode. Then, SPSS software is used to analyze the results of the two classes.The result shows that multimedia application can motivate students’interest in learning English and improve their enthusiasm and performance in the class. Nevertheless, during the experiment some problems of multimedia application have been found. So some related strategies on enhancing the effectiveness of applying multimedia into the English class teaching are proposed in the last chapter to improve the English teaching in primary schools. It is hoped that this study will give some suggestions to primary teachers to improve the effectiveness of primary English classroom teaching.
