A large amount of researchers both at home and abroad have conducted relative researches toprove the importance of senior high school students’ English extracurricular reading. And manyresearches have verified the contribution of the extracurricular reading made to the languageimprovement, the research on the correlation between English extracurricular reading quantity ofdifferent text types of senior high school students and their reading performance still remainsunexplored. Moreover, the contribution of the effect of extracurricular reading quantity has beenlargely neglected in the practical English teaching. Therefore, this study regards senior grade2students in five parallel classes from No.1High School in Gujiao as the subjects in order toinvestigate the relationship between English extracurricular reading quantity of different text types ofsenior high school students and their reading performance. The thesis aims to answer the followingthree research questions:(1) What are the factors that influence the extracurricular reading quantity and how to increasesenior high school students'English extracurricular reading quantity?(2) What is the relationship between senior high school students'English extracurricular readingquantity of different text types and their reading performance?(3) What is the difference of influential degree of English extracurricular reading quantity ofdifferent text types to reading performance?In order to answer the questions, the author selected five groups of students from No.1HighSchool in Gujiao. And two research methods are employed in the thesis: interview and test. Theinterview is conducted to explore the factors that influence the extracurricular reading quantity. Thetest aims to explore the relationship between students’ extracurricular reading quantity of different texttypes and their reading performance. The statistics is analyzed by SPSS18.0.The results of the research show that the English extracurricular reading quantity of senior highschool students is quite small. And the students in the experimental class have achieved greaterprogress in reading than those in the control class. It reveals that there is a relationship betweenEnglish extracurricular reading quantity of different text types of senior high school students and theirreading performance. Besides, extracurricular reading quantity of different text types has a differenteffect on senior high students’ reading performance. And the increasing of extracurricular reading quantity of narration influences the reading performance most.Based on the research findings, the author proposes some pedagogical implications of how toincrease students’ reading quantity. Firstly, teachers should make plans of extracurricular reading so asto achieve clear and specific reading goals. Secondly, the materials of English extracurricular readingshould be various especially focusing on narration in order to widen students’ reading range. Thirdly,it is an appropriate way to create a good language environment for arousing students’ extracurricularreading interest. Fourthly, teachers are requested to help students strengthen their self-confidencethrough the increasing of extracurricular reading quantity. Lastly, it is teachers’ duty to give guidanceof reading strategies to their students in purpose of letting them master the basic reading skills.This research is based on the theory of Input Hypothesis, Affective Filter Hypothesis and Schemareading theory. The author employs interview and test in order to investigate the factors that influencethe extracurricular reading quantity. This thesis also analyzes the influence of students’ extracurricularreading quantity of different text types on reading performance. Lastly, the author puts forward someadvice to the English teaching.
