The Subject-leaders are the backbone and core of first class teaching staff in China, represent the highest level of higher education teachers, and determine the quality of higher education and the standard of academy. As the leaders of research group, their competence has great effect on the research results of themselves and the research group they lead. The research papers on Subject-leaders are relatively rich, but researchers focusing on them are too single, and who are Subject-leaders is quite vague. Also there is little specialized study on Subject-leaders’ competence. Due to those problems of Subject-leaders research, this paper make use of literature method and comparative method, combine the achievements of existing research and analyze what competence the Subject-leaders should gain. On the one hand, setting academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering as example, explain the competence of Subject-leaders and influencing factors in higher education. On the other hand, analyze the competence of Nobel prize winners and influencing factors. Comparing the competence of the Subject-leaders in China and that of Nobel prize winners, conclusions are made that both of them possess noble ideological and moral, good physical and psychological qualities, outstanding professional research capacity. However, there is still a certain gap between the innovative research achievements the Subject-leaders gain and the world-first-class. The main reason to the gap is the difference of academic environment. So it is necessary to create good academic environment to develop the competence of Subject-leaders, so as to cultivate and improve the competence of all Subject-leaders in higher education.
