Lighthouse is volunteer activity for rural education launched by a grass-root non-governmental orgnization (NGO), which indicates to improve the educational status of the remote areas and promote local sustainable development by organizing well-educated college students to voluntarily teach in the schools and communicate with teachers there.Objective:The grass-root NGO volunteers’ motivation and behavior, however, show the most pure volunteer spirit. Through the investigation and analysis on their psychological features accurately indicate more particularity of volunteers.Method:In this study,157college student volunteers of Lighthouse (male=63, female=94) are tested by NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), Holland Self-directed Search (SDS) and SCL-90Self-reporting Inventory to investigate their personality traits, vocational orientation and mental health. The data were analysed by SPSS17.0on t-test, variance analysis and relevance analysis.Results:1. On personality traits, Lighthouse volunteers’ Agreeableness (44.32±4.67) is significantly higher, while Neuroticism (31.02±6.4) is significantly lower. Regardless of gender, origin, grade, major categories, whether differences of single-child, family income per capita level, their personalities showed high consistency. 2. On vocational orientation, Lighthouse volunteers’ Social type score (36.18±9.45) was greatly higher; while Realistic type (18.20±10.88), Investigative type(21.50±10.47), Conventional type(22.99±8.29) scored significantly lower than general college students.3. On mental health, Lighthouse volunteers gained a high level generally. SCL-90total score (34.79±27.65), positive symptom distress level (1.43±0.39), as well as somatization (0.21±0.25), interpersonal sensitivity (0.52±0.45), hostility (0.21±0.29) and paranoid ideation (0.32±0.37) factors scores were significantly lower than the national norm. Only the obsessive-compulsive factor score (0.78±0.53) was significantly higher than the national norm, but not significantly higher than ordinary college students yet. The total symptom detection rate is5.73%, which is lower than the national average of9%. Both male and female Lighthouse volunteers’ mental health status were significantly better than the male and female college students in general, and female volunteers scored significantly lower than male volunteers on paranoid ideation.4. The correlation of Lighthouse volunteers’ personality traits and vocational orientation shows that Neuroticism was significantly negatively correlated with Enterprising type; Extraversion was significantly positively correlated with Social type, Enterprising type and Artistic type; Openness was significantly positively correlated with Social type, Investigative type, Enterprising type, and Artistic type; Conscientiousness was significantly positively correlated with Social type, Enterprising type and Conventional type.5. The correlation of Lighthouse volunteers’ personality traits and mental health shows that Neuroticism was negatively correlated with the status of mental health; while Agreeableness and Conscientiousness were positively correlated with the status of mental health. Extraversion factor was significantly negatively correlated with the number of positive items of SCl-90and somatization factor, obsessive-compulsive factor, interpersonal sensitivity factor and depression factor. Openness was negatively correlated with total score, the number of positive items, interpersonal sensitivity factor and depression factor.6. The correlation of Lighthouse volunteers’ vocational orientation and mental health shows that Social type was negatively correlated with the positive symptom distress level of SCL-90and obsessive-compulsive factor and phobic anxiety factor; Investigative type was negatively correlated with phobic anxiety factor; Enterprising type was negatively correlated with positive symptom distress level.Conclusion:1. Lighthouse volunteers’ personalities showed high consistency, and Agreeableness trait is significantly high.2. Lighthouse volunteers have a strong social orientation in behavior.3. The mental health level of Lighthouse volunteers is significantly higher not only than the general college students’ but also than Chinese nomal people’s.4. Lighthouse volunteers’ personalities have abandond correlation with their vocational orientations and mental health.
