In the new curriculum reform background, teachers’ role is particularlyimportant. Teachers act as the main body in education reform and educationpractice, responsible for the success in carrying out curriculum reform andeducation development. Therefore, in the new round of basic educationreform process, the role transformation of the primary and secondary schoolteachers becomes one of the most important aspects in education reform.Study on English teachers’ role present situation will contribute to deepeningthe understanding of the essence of English education and perfecting theEnglish teaching process.Under the new curriculum reform, for senior high school Englishteachers, what are the main specific goals of classroom role transformation?What kind of roles should teachers transform to? How is the effect? As aresearcher and practitioner, the author pays close attention to these problems.This study takes the new curriculum reform as the background, centers onteachers’ classroom role transformation. Its aim is to investigate Englishteacher role present situation in the Wulanchabu city and tries to find outsome problems in teachers’ role playing and role transformation, thus providessome references for educational improvement of less developed region in ourcountry. This research has important theoretical and realistic significance.Classroom roles will be affected by the different language views,knowledge views that English teachers hold. After investigating the languageview and the knowledge view, combining the new curriculum reform in ourcountry, the author positions high school English teachers’ classroom role asfour representative goals: students’ organizer, reminder, participant andestimator. On the basis of the definition, the author also learns about somerelated researches at home and abroad on teachers’ role in class. Based on fourgoals, this survey is conducted respectively in two middle schools inWulanchabu. It aims to find the present status of high school English teacherrole playing in the Wulanchabu city.This research mainly adopts the literature research method, questionnaire method and interview method. By the study of literature, the author relatedtheories and the new curriculum background, basic concepts, concrete goals,so as to determine the senior high school English teachers’ role in the newcurriculum classroom. Later, the study uses questionnaires and interviews toillustrate the current English teaching and teachers’ role conversion situationin Wulanchabu City.The statistics shows that, among the teachers in Wulanchabu, theevaluator role playing is better, while the other three kinds of roles is not idealenough. The survey has found that most teachers have accepted the newcurriculum English teaching concept, and strive for the classroom roleconversion, but behavior change is relatively slow. But there are still asignificant part of the teachers failing to break through the original teachingideas. They can’t adjust classes according to the actual situation. In addition,the region is located in the northwest, teaching conditions and socialenvironment have restricted the transformation of the teachers’ role. In spiteof teachers’ inner desire, there are great barriers in the teaching practiceactivities. According to the survey, the author concluded some enlightenmentand also put forward some suggestions.In addition, to adapt to the new curriculum and realize own roleconversion, the high school English teachers should improve the ability ofteaching reflection.In a word, this study has both theoretical and practical value. Throughdeeply researching on foreign language teaching theories and combiningEnglish new curriculum reform in our country, the author puts forward theconcrete goals of high school English teachers’ role conversion, enriching theforeign language teaching theories. In practice aspect, this study, whichselects two high schools in the Wulanchabu city as the objects of investigation,can also be used to provide the reference for English curriculum reform in theless developed areas in China.
