With the development of society and science technology, the development of mass mediumof diversification, the stable development of the traditional media,new media develops rapidly.The mass media does not only change the way we live,but also changes the way we learn.Mobile phones, in the school have been very popular. Mobile phone brings not only the phonecalls and text messages, but alsobrings the network. The new media has been eagerly soughtafter high school students. Under this new form, high school student extracurricular reading haschanged. The author on the basis of investigation on the present situation of extracurricularreading in senior high school students, instructional strategiesaccordingly, in order to improvethe quality of high school students in extra-curricular reading. This paper started from thefollowing parts:The first part is about the investigation of extracurricular reading of high school students inthe background of the mass media. This investigation is mainly for the following five aspects:the purpose, reading media, reading habits, reading contentof high school studentsextracurricular reading and whether or not need the teachers guidance while reading. Throughinvestigation, we can clearly understand the status of high school students’ extracurricularreading and are easy to have a definite object in the instruction.The second part discusses the mass media under the background of extracurricularreadingactivities. Analysis of the characteristics of contemporary mass media, andthe mass media hasthe influence on the extracurricular reading activities in senior high school students.in thebackground of the mass media,the introduction to the factors which has an influence on the highschool students extracurricular readingbesides the mass media.This part analyzes the readingrequirements of the " high school language curriculum standard of senior high school students ",also analyzes the different understanding of parents, teachers and students toextracurricularreading in the current social background.The third part introduces the principles of the extracurricular reading of senior high schoolstudents, including the principle of subjectivity, the principle ofsystematicness, the principle ofprogressive and the principle of education.The fourth part introduces the summary of the strategies of the guidance extra-curricular reading of senior high school students on the basis of practice in thebackground of the massmedia, including the strategy of arousing the interest in reading, the strategy of training readingendurance,the strategy of developing the habit of reading, the strategy of reading guidance andthe strategy of establishingthe evaluation system.The extracurricular reading is an important way to improve students’ Chineseaccomplishmentand enhance students’ personal accomplishment. With the changes of the times,the extracurricular reading in different periods have differentcharacteristics,which is a new oldforever topic.We will keep up with the pace of the times continuously to adjust our guidancestrategy, and to make the extracurricular reading is an effective way for students to improve theirliteracy.
