Since the foundation of new China, a series of policies have been conducted tofoster the development of ethnic regions. Under the strategy of Western development, anumber of policies have been adopted to support the western ethnic regions. As theyoungest autonomous prefecture, Enshi has developed considerably, in particularthrough increased tourism. As a result, the living standards of the Tu ethnic minoritygroup have been greatly improved. However, many questions remain: How to ensurethe ethnic policies implement are most useful? How to best highlight the distinctivecultural traditions and customs of the Tu minority? How to overcome the currentinsufficiencies and difficulties existing in tourism, so as to promote local economy andachieve the maximum objective of economic and social efficiency? Such questions needto be resolved as soon as possible。As the cradle of Shang Gu Ba culture, Enshi enjoys unique ethnic features in itsculture and customs, which finalizes the distinct revolutionary culture. The Tu ethnicminority group has a distinct history and unique culture, including the Diao JiaoBuilding, Enshi Empire Palace, clothing and everyday objects and relics. These areregarded as representative of Tu tangible culture; there are also areas of intangiblecultural heritage which are unique, such as etiquette, folk music, dance and more.In Enshi, the tourist industry has already achieved many recent successes. Manyexplorations and experiments have been made in terms of utilizing Tu culture for touristpurposes, so some experience has been accumulated in this area. Nonetheless, someproblems still remain: The protection of Tu culture is not always considered as much asit should be in the process of tourism development; Tu culture is not currently given acentral enough role, and ways to do this requires futher exploration. Specificsuggestions include: creating a more complex and detailed brand image regarding theTu ethnic minority group; a better focus on protecting the intangible heritage of Tuethnic group; integrating cultural resources of the Tu ethnic group with other group;enhancing cultural content and its essence; constructing more infrastructure which isdirectly associated with increasing tourism; actively targeting the domestic and overseasmarket, increasing awareness of Enshi as a destination and improving tourist services.
