During the next National Twelfth Five-Year Plan period, the emphasis of domestic automotive industry development has transferred from complete vehicle to key component R&D and manufacture, which create the environment for component R&D capability development and increase. Steering column module is not only key component and D-part of one vehicle, but core competence production of K-Company as well; whose importance to K-Company is a well understood thing. The knowledge management theory has been brought in R&D process since year2009to ensure the efficient control, management and efficiency improvement.This article presents the detail review and summary of writer’s R&D work experience on K-Company steering column module. On the basis of summarization on new production R&D method and knowledge management theory, the writer has analyzed the routine problems in K-Company R&D process, such as improper mass production, repeated design mistake, halfway definition of OEM request etc. Combined with Nonaka SECI model, knowledge creation theory and five-stage model, the writer has proposed and implemented the new production R&D knowledge management module of steering column module. Through the before after comparison, the writer has concluded that, with the application of this model, all aspects in R&D process, such as the new production R&D efficiency, FMEA, knowledge transfer etc., have been obviously improved. The new production R&D knowledge management module not only enhance the R&D efficiency of steering column module, but also provide K-Company with good reference and lesson learned on production R&D knowledge management.
