Analysis For Harmony Between Economic Development And Environmental Quality In Hainan Province

Coordinative Development between Environment and Economy is the core of a regional sustainable development. With now Hainan is having new opportunities and challenges for development with the strategic position establishment as a international tourism island. There’s an inevitable trend to develop the tertiary industry dominated by tourism. But considering the reality of Hainan, Hainan’s development is still need to give priority to industrial development for a long period of time, to provide financial support for long-term construction of international tourism island and ecological protection. The rapid development of the industrial economy, could accelerate the achievement of the goals to strong province and rich people, but also increases the risk of environmental degradation. Therefore, it has a practical significance for the construction of an international tourism island to research the relationship between environment and economy. The aim of the present thesis was to disclose the relationship between economic development and environmental quality of Hainan so as to provide some useful recommendations for the international tourism island development programme and sustainable development of the island province for a long run.In this paper, evaluation index system was built to analyze harmony between Hainan economic development and environmental quality. Based on this system, the harmony of economic development and environmental quality in Hainan decreased from2000to2010, the average value was as reluctance harmonious development. The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) theory was introduced to describe the relationship between Hainan’s environment and economy. In order to analysis Hainan’s current situation in environment, principal component analysis was used to estimate environmental pollution comprehensive index based on the collection of time series data on environmental pollution. In the empirical test, different pollution emissions and environmental pollution comprehensive index were chose to build a new analytical model together with per capita GDP. The results showed that there was a long-term equilibrium relationship between Hainan’s environment and economy: Economic development would affect environmental quality while the deterioration of environmental quality will hinder the development of economy; typical Environmental Kuznets Curve could not well characterize the relationships between some environmental indicators and per capita GDP. Only the volume of industrial soot discharged on Hainan GDP pc was in accord with inverted "U" shape with decline curve, while the curves of the other environmental indicators were in different shapes with rising curve. Based on this, suggestions were put forward to promote coordinative development of Hainan’s environment and economy, which could provide a reference for the long-term development of international tourism island.
