Water quality monitoring, one of the main elements in environmental monitoring,can provide timely, accurate and comprehensive reflection of the status quo and variationtrends of water quality, which thanks to the development of measurement and controltechnology and sensor technology. In recent years, the wireless sensor networktechnology has been widely used with low cost, low power, flexible networking features.Its application in water quality monitoring has become a new hotspot. Water qualitymonitoring system based on wireless sensor networks has application examples in foreigncountries. And, china also made certain findings. Based on this, this paper has designedthe smart water quality monitoring system (WMS), which has the function of datacollection, transmission, storage and processing. Focusing on the design of the sensornode and monitoring center software, the system has unified protocol, highmaintainability and scalability.In this paper, MC13213, the second generation of Freescale’s ZigBee hardwareplatform, is used to design the sensor node. The paper also makes the design of minimumsystem circuits, RF circuits and sensor conditioning circuits for the node accordingembedded hardware component design method. The real-time acquisition of temperature,pH, dissolved oxygen is realized. At the same time, drivers have been designed for thenode and improved clustering routing algorithms and transfer protocol have been used toestablish a network, which will complete data acquisition and wireless transceiver.In this paper, the monitoring center software can receive, process and displayreal-time data from the sensor network. While designing the monitoring center software,it is divided into communication software and management software according to theprinciples of software engineering. They realize data synchronization through thedatabase and realize software maintainability and scalability. The communicationsoftware receives and sends data with the way of multi-threaded asynchronous socket. And it uses double buffer to deal with delay and concurrency issues. Managementsoftware uses B/S architecture to design friendly interactive interface, which is easy toupgrade and maintain. Meanwhile, based on the provided interface, the gateway oflaboratory is used to send data from the sensor node to the monitoring center through theGPRS network.The technology involved in this paper includes WSN, ZigBee, GPRS, sensor etc.And, while designing the hardware and software, the embedded software engineeringideas is fully considered, which achieves the maintainability and scalability of waterquality monitoring system. After testing the communication and regression of eachmodule, it proves that the system has a high stability and can realize real-time remotemonitoring of water quality.
