Zhaotong City of Yunnan Province is an important areas of flue-cured tobacco planting where the difference of ecological conditions is very big. Nowadays, there is less choice to local tobacco production.. In order to development Hongta Group’s own brand, new flue-cured tobacco varieties introduced became a way to realize the strategy of tobacco raw materials differentiation, to ensure the characteristics of cigarette products, and to improve the quality and efficiency of the flue-cured tobacco production. In this research, the flue-cured varieties NC196and NC471introduced from American were used to sdudy the adaptability and suitable nitrigrn usage rate under difference altitude of Zhaotong by field experiments, The main results were showed as following:(1) Zhaotong City is a typical mountain plateau topography, and the geographical distribution of tobacco-planting soils were widespread and the types of tobacco-planting soils were various. The tobacco planting soil basically ranges from weakly acidic to neutral. It is rich in organic, suitable in nitrogen content, lower in phosphorus content, lack in potassium,general lack in boron and chlorine.The soil fertility levels of high altitude Longjie was higher than the middle altitude Haizi.(2) The matching of light and heat and water were coordination in field growth duration of lue-cured tobacco in Zhaotong. The rain and heat in the same quarter in vigorous growing stage and maturing stage and the bigger diurnal temperature range were climatic advantages.The altitude difference was nearly400m in high altitude Longjie and middle altitude Haizi, its climate was different.The monthly average temperature in high altitude Longjie is higher1.5~2.0℃than middle altitude Haizi. The diurnal amplitude in high altitude Longjie is big, while the diurnal amplitude in middle altitude Haiz is small.Its vigorous growing earlier stage was droughtier, and its vigorous growing later stage was more rainfall.(3) Both of American introduced flue-cured tobacco cultivars own better agronomic characters and botanical charactersm, faster seedling growth, uniformity vigour, stronger field vigour, with distinct maturity character,but the output value, unit price, high-quality tobacco proportion compared to the local main Yunyan87varieties are low. They are not easy to cure than Yunyan87varieties,but are resistant to cure. Overall,the NC196is better the NC471.(4) The American introduced flue-cured tobacco cultivars NC471is more sensitive than the NC196on altitude reaction, suitable for planting in middle altitude Haizi. The American introduced flue-cured tobacco cultivars NC196is more sensitive than the NC471on fertilizer response, suitable for planting in the high fertilization level. The American introduced flue-cured tobacco cultivars NC196has relatively good economic characters to plant under high fertility levels or middle fertility levels in middle altitude areas,while NC471to plant under high fertility levels in middle altitude areas. The output and output value of American introduced flue-cured tobacco cultivars NC196are higher than NC471, more suitable for planting in Yunnan Zhaotong City.(5) The output, output value, the average price and high-quality tobacco proportion of American introduced flue-cured tobacco cultivars NC196are relatively good under nitrogen application81.75~98.1kg/hm2.The output, output value, the average price and high-quality tobacco proportion of American introduced flue-cured tobacco cultivars NC471are relatively good under nitrogen application98.1kg/hm2.
