Abstract/Summary:
There are two kinds of negative expression according to the’VC da’strecture in Xiangtan dialect. One is’mao (negative adverb) VC’, the other is ’mao V de C’ Compared with Mandarin and other Chinese dialect,’mao V de C’ is a special negative structure for Xiangtan dialect. In this paper, we make the’mao V de C’ structure for the study. The paper consists of five chapters and a conclusion. Chapter one gives a detailed discussion on features of ’mao V de C’. It mainly analysis grammatical classes and semantic features of compositions of this structure. From the nature of the result expressed by result complement, there are two kinds of ’mao V de C’. One is structure A. What its complement expressing is ’expected result’. The other is structure B. Its complement shows a unexpected result. Chapter two describes grammatical features of structure A and B respectively. There are lots of differences between these two structures. Chapter three discusses semantic features of ’mao V de C’ A and ’mao V de C B. We also compare ’mao V de C’ with ’mao VC’, and define the status of structure A and structure B in Xiangtan dialect. Structure A is a unmarked structure in the semantic category of’the expected result has not achieved’, while structure B is a minor and restricted type in the semantic category of’unexpected results haven’t appeared’in Xiangtan dialect. In view of differences in syntactic features, semantic features and status in the dialect between structure A and structure B, this paper concludes that ’mao V de C’A and ’mao V de C’B are two different structures with same form. Besides, division of work between’mao V de C’ and ’mao VC’ reflects that it’s sensitive to the opposition of the two sememes (’expected’and ’unexpected’) for Xiangtan dialect. Chapter four demonstrates the internal combination relation of ’mao V de C’A. Structure A is composed of negative adverb ’mao’ and possibility complement structure ’V de C’. It reflects a absolutely different negation process from’mao VC’. The features of’V de C’ restricts structural characteristics and syntactic features of’mao V de C’ A. And structure A’s semantic features also results from the special negation process. Chapter five discusses the interal combination relation of’mao V de C’B according to diachronic development of Chinese and synchronic features of Xiangtan dialect. We think that structure B is a structure left over from history. It’s composed of negative adverb’mao’and combined result complement ’V de C’ There is a differentiation process between structure B and structure A. In contemporary Xiangtan dialect, structure A has a opposite form while structure B doesn’t have, which this paper considers a important reason why structure A become a unmarked phenomenal while structure B is just a minor type.
