Although the possibility complement in Chinese grammar may be frequently used in daily communication,English and other languages alike lack the grammatical structure corresponding to the possibility complement in Chinese language hence the possibility complement has become a key and difficult point for African students to learn Chinese.African students as well as other foreign students use various strategies to avoid making errors such as avoiding to use this structure but these strategies lead to more errors.Therefore,the possibility complement grammatical structure has become one of the focuses of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.Using the error analysis theory combined with the research results of Chinese possibility complement,this paper introduces the previous studies done on this topic from the two aspects of Chinese ontology and teaching Chinese as a foreign language.Using a contrastive analysis approach,this paper analyzes the possibility complement expressions of Chinese,English and Zambian Chichewa language(s),highlights their similarities and differences and how they affect the acquisition of the possibility complememnt in Chinese language.The paper further analyzes teaching materials such as commonly used textbooks when teaching in order to find out the influence of textbooks on Zambian students.With the usage of quessionnaires as a method of data collection,the researcher collected data to explore the possible causes of the errors.According to the findings,Zambian students tend to mix the possibility complement with other complements,confuse the three different types of the possibility complement,make grammatical structural errors,mix the usage of the possibility complement and special sentence patterns such as “ba” and “bei”,the incorrect addition of "Le" auxiliary verb to indicate the completion of an action,and the wrong replacement of modal verbs,etc.Six types of errors.The study further found that there are three major causes of these errors which are the negative influence of the mother tongue;the Learners' learning strategies and teaching strategies.This paper not only explored the similarities and differences of the possibility complement grammar structure in Chinese,English as well as Chichewa languages but also povided helpful recommendations which teachers as well as students can both use tominimize and resolve these problems in order to improve the teaching quality of Chinese language.
