Chinese textbooks used in international schools often help the students understand themeaning and usage of the new words by annotating them in English; however, there aresome errors in those annotations, which is a phenomenon worthy of great attention. Thisdissertation chooses Chinese Made Easy, a popular series of textbooks used in internationalschools· secondary Chinese courses, as the subject of study. Chinese Made Easy generallyfollows the Character-based Approachμ, which places great importance on the teachingand learning of characters. A distinguishing feature of this series of textbooks is that it notonly annotates the whole new word, but also annotates the new characters. Using casestudy model, this dissertation also discusses the new words annotation problems of ChineseMade Easy, and puts forward some feasible suggestions. In the end, this dissertation usingChinese Made Easy as an example, elaborates the rules of setting up a word which needs tobe annotated in vocabulary list. That is, the annotation unit should be a morpheme ratherthan a character. The aim of this research is to improve the new words annotation ofChinese Made Easy as well as other TCFL textbooks.
