The Volunteer Chinese Teachers Program (hereafter referred to as "VolunteerProgram") was set up to provide voluntary services for solving the problem of ChineseTeachers’ shortage in other countries. Since Hanban China sent the first group ofvolunteers to Thailand and Philippines in2003, more than ten thousands volunteers hadbeen sent out to about one hundred countries in the world in the past ten years. It hassolved, to a large extent, the lack of Volunteer Chinese Teacher all over the world,whether it is for the Confucius Institute or for the overseas primary and secondaryschools offering Mandarin courses for their students. At the same time, VolunteerChinese Teachers have deeply impressed foreigners for their endurance, devotionand outstanding performance, and they are called "Angels from China","the MostLovely People".The comprehensive quality of Volunteer Chinese Teachers, who are as thebackbone in the International Promotion of Chinese, plays a pivotal role in thespread and popularization of both Chinese Language and Chinese Culture. Moreover,to varying degrees, it affects the success or failure, as well as the effect, of theInternational Promotion of Chinese. Thus it is very important and urgent to studyand investigate the comprehensive quality of International Volunteer ChineseTeacher.As the introduction part, the significance of the comprehensive quality ofvolunteers was analyzed, including the meaning to Teaching Chinese to Foreigners,Volunteers Chinese Teacher Program of Hanban China and the teachers who engage inTeaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, and some related technical termswere defined according some experts’ points of view, such as the definition of VolunteerChinese Teacher and the comprehensive quality of teacher; moreover, the content of thisthesis as well as the research method were listed in this part. After that, literature reviewwas shown by referring and learning from articles and opinions in those worksresearching Volunteer Chinese Teacher and the comprehensive quality of teacher, and asummary was made according it. Based on “The Standard for International ChineseLanguage Teachers”, which was edited and pressed by Hanban China, a questionnairewas designed with the terms of Fundamental Information of Volunteer, Basic LanguageKnowledge and Skill, Culture and Social Inter-cultural Communication, Second Language Acquisition and Learning Strategy, Pedagogy, Comprehensive Qualities ofTeacher, and Volunteer at last. The questionnaire was distributed to the74InternationalVolunteer Chinese Teachers who were assigned to Indonesia in2011; then aftercollected, every item was assigned a value by means of statistical analysis method inorder to measure self-evaluation score of all the volunteers in each item, and all the datawas analyzed and studied via transverse comparison. It was found that the overallcharacteristics of the volunteers were above moderate level, but on some items theirqualities haven’t highly met the requirements of “The Standard”, for example, therequirements for foreign language speaking and reading as well as Second LanguageAcquisition. Therefore, the subjective and objective factors affecting the comprehensivequality of Volunteers were studied on the basis of the questionnaire analysis. Besides,some volunteers were chosen randomly for interview, and suggestion was givenaccording their opinions from the perspective of the revelation for developingInternational Volunteer Chinese Teacher, the advice to Hanban China for Volunteersselecting and training, and the enlightenment for Volunteer Chinese Teacher.
