With the further reform and opening-up to the outside world, especially since China’sentry into the WTO, China has seen an increasing number of business connections andcultural exchanges with the rest of the world over the past ten years and more and moreforeign products have been imported to China. As a result, translation of applied textsfrom English into Chinese accounts for quite a large proportion of current translationmissions. However, differences of cultural and language environment between Chineseand Western countries restrict Chinese consumers’ purchases and make a negativeinfluence on the selling of imported goods, therefore product introduction plays animportant role in the import and export trade, its translation should be paid enoughattention.Product introduction is pragmatic text and falls into popular science category. Itmainly offers services for consumers, and its purpose is to sell goods through buildinggreat company image and introducing products to consumers. And the Skopostheorie isa theory of purposeful action. In the framework of the theory, one of the most importantfactors determining the translation strategies is the skopos. In the process of translation, there are3principles should be followed, that is skopos, coherence and loyalty. Themost important principle should be the skopos. The source text is merely a source ofinformation; a translator can analyze and understand the source text seriously withmaximum freedom, so as to choose the most suitable translation strategies and methods.Product descriptions which have special business purpose also keep to this principle. Inaccordance with the Skopostheorie, the author translates the report through combiningproper translation strategy—domestication and translation methods such astransliteration, addition and translation of long sentences. The author proposes that thetranslator should be based on the customers’ need in order to achieve the translation purpose and choose the flexible methods and strategies during translation.
