The Chinese government is receiving close attention in the internationalcommunity. Therefore, the Government Publicity Texts plays a crucial role in lettingthe world know China better and introducing China to the world as well. However, itstranslation is still far from satisfaction. The poor quality of such translations can beattributed to the translator’s lack of awareness in both political and inter-culturalcommunication, and it is more closely related to inappropriate choice of translationstrategies. This thesis explores the Chinese-English translation strategies of GovernmentPublicity Texts on the basis of Skopostheorie, which has its feasibility and superiorityin that it does not completely emphasize “loyalty” and “equivalence” to the originaltexts, but focuses on choosing appropriate translation strategies in line with thepurposes and communicating effect that the version wants to convey after an analysisof the original texts. It concludes that domestication, foreignization and trans-editingare feasible strategies in translating such texts. Domestication strategy meets with theneeds of the target readerships; foreignization strategy popularizes the Chinese culture, while trans-editing strategy improves the translation effectiveness and readability. These strategies can be of great benefit in lowering or even avoiding translation errors, and thus enhancing the readability and improving the communicating effect of theversion.
