Globalization is becoming more and more a distinctive feature for China’sdevelopment. With the development of globalization, China plays an increasinglyimportant role. One of an important form of business activities is exhibition.Exhibition is a crucial form of business activities, playing a greater role in the worldarena. Hence it is of great significance for exhibition interpretation studies ininternational business.Traditional translation theories devoted to the study from linguistic aspect. However, the German functionalists studied translation theories under Skopos theory.Compared with traditional translation theories, the most distinctive feature of Skopostheory is to choose translation strategies according to the principle of purpose. In thetranslation process, the interpreters are necessarily to choose proper methods oftranslation to achieve the goal of communication. This thesis explains the strategies and principles of exhibition interpretationunder Skopos theory and is divided into three parts:introduction, main body andconclusion. The first part is introduction, which briefly illustrates the present state ofresearch and significance of this thesis. Reise was the first one to put up the functionaltheories. In her view, the most important aim a translator should achieve is functionrather than equivalence. Then one of Reise’s students-Vermeer got inspiration fromhis teacher and found functionalistic theory, which considers translation as a kind ofhuman activity with a purpose. For quite a period of time, Skopos theory hasundergone tremendous development. However, everything has two sides, and Skopostheory is not excluded. There are many oppositions in the developing process. Somescholars hold the view that there are many factors influencing the translation, such asculture, educational background and social background. Although there factors doexert some influences on translation, the primary factor determines a good or badtranslation is still Skopos theory and its three rules. Skopos rules are proposed byNord. The three rules are: expressive Skopos (also called Skopos rules),coherent rule, loyalty rule. The first chapter brings up the definition and rules, developments, criticism and contributions of Skopos theory. Skopos meaning aim, came from Greek word. AndSkopos theory is firstly proposed by Katharina Reiss and her student made furtherdevelopment of this definition. A good translation is judged by its aim, that is tosay, whether the translator express the purpose of the speaker. Other factors such aseducational background and culture also exert great influences on translation. Latestdevelopments by functionalists proposed that Skopos is more important thanequivalence in translation. And three rules constitutes of Skopos theory, namelyexpressive Skopos, coherence rule and faithful rule. The second chapter is mainly devoted to the definition, significance, operationways and multifunction of exhibition interpretation. Exhibition interpretation includesall kinds of interpretation in terms of its forms. As exhibition has become animportant ways for China to conduct business with the other countries, study ofexhibition interpretation is of great significance. The third chapter put forward thefeatures of exhibition interpretation and strategies of exhibition interpretation underSkopos rule. A good translation should be featured by expressive Skopos, beinginformative and being concise. Base on the previous analysis, several methods can beused in translation, namely amplification, omission, and paraphrases. A number ofexamples are provided to illustrate. The analysis of translation of neologism andcultural influences of exhibition interpretation are also included in this part. The last part is conclusion, summing up this thesis. Exhibition interpretation asan effective means of promoting international trade, also plays a great role inexchanging cultures and enhancing communications. Skopos theory is one of the mostimportant theories of functionalistic schools, which provide the theoretical bases forthis thesis. The thesis firstly introduced the definition and basic principles of Skopostheory, then illustrates the definition and features of exhibition interpretation. Thethird part proposed the strategies of exhibition interpretation by putting forwardspecific cases and making comparisons.
