A Report On The Translation Of Chapter One Of Dear Life

This thesis is composed of a ten-thousand-word translation practice and relatedtheories. The translation report consists of the analysis of the original text, case analysisand conclusion of the practice. This translation report gives analysis and summary to thetranslation process of Chapter one of Dear Life.Dear Life is a collection of stories written by Alice Munro, a Canadian short-storywriter. She was the winner of the2009Man Booker International Prize, a three-timewinner of Canada’s Governor General’s Award for fiction, and a perennial contender forthe Nobel Prize. Generally regarded as one of the world’s most renowned fiction writers,Munro writes about the human condition and relationships seen through the lens of dailylife. Munro’ writing has established her as “one of our greatest contemporary writers offiction”, or as Cynthia Ozick put it,“our Chekhov”.This translation report mainly analyzes the problems I encountered in the process,solutions, the translation theory and skills used in the process on the basis of the text, andgives specific examples to present the translation process. In this thesis, Chapter onemainly introduces the object and content of the translation practice, author’s backgroundand the reasons why the writer chooses this novel as the task. Chapter two illustrates thecourse of the translation process and specific steps of translation practice. Chapter threeanalyzes the translation skills used in the translation process and the approaches to dealwith difficult sentences. Chapter four introduces what I have learnt from the translation.Conclusion of this paper is drawn in Chapter five.
