A Report On The English Translation Of Premier Wen’s Government Report In2012

The growing demands for high-level, pragmatic translators and interpreters cannot be met by traditional translation and interpretation education focusing on the fields of literature, or theory. Meanwhile, professional translation and interpretation, or non-literature translation and interpretation, has an increasingly growing share in translation market, but the service quality is far from satisfactory and translation problems can be found everywhere. This is because the lack of applied translators. The program MTI, Master of Translation and Interpretating, is launched to bridge the gap in order to adapt the developing situation and balance the demands of talent market.The annual government report is the central government who gives the status of their work in the past and the policy and plan for one year or five years in the future, and also an important way for Chinese people to understand government policies and measures. Its English translation is a window for foreign people to know and learn China’s politics. The report has its unique language features, words with Chinese characteristics and sentences with complex structures. According to the terms and characteristics of political essays and combined with the principles of English translation of political essays as accuracy, standardization, and unity, the paper explores translators’ translation methods and techniques to deal with the Chinese characteristic words, acronyms, repetition of words, no subject sentences, paratactic sentences, and complex sentences in the process of English translation.Because of these features, the government report is one kind in Chinese-English translation, and the report in2012reflects the recent development and progress of China. As the translational practice text, the paper will discuss translation strategies in translation process and analyze why and how to adopt proper strategies in different stages in translation process. In this paper, translation cases will be analyzed to help explain translation strategies. At the same time summarized the understanding to the professional translation, the author has the experience to the political translation. The author hopes to share experience with other translators and contribute to the improvement of MTI program.
