| Based on the theory of communicative and semantic translation proposed by Peter Newmark, this thesis intends to make a study on translation strategies of Chinese culture-loaded words in the gala subtitle texts by taking subtitle translations in CCTV Mid-autumn Festival Gala from2008-2012as examples.This thesis first makes an analysis on the profound meaning of Chinese Mid-autumn culture from the aspects of historical development, social customs and emotional value. It lays emphasis on declaring the important role of the gala subtitle translation in cultural transmission and clarifies the two cultural goals of gala subtitle translation, which is to evoke the foreign audience’s emotional affections as well as acknowledge them of some Mid-autumn customs. Therefore, with the touchstone of the two goals and the definitions of communicative and semantic translation, the combination of the two approaches is recommended in the application of the subtitle translation. After categorizing cultural-loaded words in the gala subtitle texts being categorized, this thesis makes an attempt to put forwards four concrete strategies:1) replacing the image in the SL with a TL image,2) same image plus sense,3) conversion of image to sense and4) deletion of image. This thesis hopes to awaken translators’cultural consciousness in the process of translating bilingual gala subtitles and make a contribution to the strategies of gala subtitle translation. |
