Based on the pronunciation of ancient voiced initial consonants nowadays, the scholars make the Chinese dialects several parts. The first and even the only condition for the people who think Pinghua should be an individual dialect is’the yangping tone of voiced syllable initials when it is voiceless stop and affricate’. However, after surveying lots of dialects and consulting materials, this characteristic also appeared at Rongcheng and Wendeng, Shandong province of Mandarin; Qingxu, Pingyao, Xiaoyi, and Jiexiu, Shanxi province of Jin Dialects; Quankou, Jiangxi province and Yangfanglin, Hubei province of Gan Dialects; Fuzhou and Xiamen, Fujian province of Min Dialects; Changsha, Hunan province of Xiang Dialects; Qingyuan, Zhejiang province of Wu Dialects; Lianxian, Lianshan, Yangshan, Guangning, Sihui, Deqing, Kaifeng, Guangdong province of Cantons; and Changlai, Lechang, Guangdong province of Shaozhou Tuhua. Consequently, all the places that have this characteristic have been analyzed and researched systematically and made the distribution map. At last, the article demonstrates this characteristic can’t be realized as the condition of mark off the dialects, hoping to provide materials and references for further research on the relationship of Pinghua and Cantonese.
