As an important part of globalization, localization is a new industry providinglanguage and technical services to the target market, and the software localizationoccupies a large portion of the market among it. During software localization, thelocalization translation is the most crucial step.In this thesis, SPS (Stoner Pipeline Simulator) localization translation is taken asan example, and Functional Translation Theory is applied as the framework is appliedto investigate its effects on the practice of software localization.Descriptive method, concept explanation and analytic method are applied tomain discuss the following three questions, i.e.,(1) what are the characteristics andfunctions of the text of software localization translation?(2)What are the differentroles during software localization translation and how do they effect on the translation?(3)How does Skopostheorie effect on software localization translation, and whattranslation skills can be used to achieve such effects?First of all, literatures which look back on the domestic and international studieson software localization translation and the Functional Translation Theory arereviewed, and the localization industry, the applied field and functions of SPS areintroduced. Then, the main concept of Functional Translation Theory, i.e., Reiss’ texttypology, Holz-Manttari’s Translation Actional Theory and Hans. J. Vermeer’sSkopostheorie is explained. Here, what should be pointed out is that only the theoriesabout the informative text, translation as an interpersonal interaction andSkopostheorie are applied in this thesis. In the second, the characteristics and functions of SPS text is analyzed byReiss’s Text Typology; the different roles during localization translation are analyzedby the theory of interpersonal translation action; by Skopostheorie, the effects ofTranslation Brief, Skopos Rule, Coherence Rule as well as Fidelity Rule on SPS localization translation are analyzed, and some translation strategies and skills arediscussed in order to achieve such effect. At last, the main findings and limitations of the study are concluded. Throughanalysis by Reiss’ text typology, it presents the following characteristics are found. Inlexical level, acronyms and abbreviations, affixations, compound nouns andtransformations are frequently used, while in syntactic level, the passive voice, thepresent tense and the imperative sentences are frequently used. And the main functionof SPS text is to assist the relevant users to understand its function to operate it.Therefore, the source text of SPS is of informative text type, and a simple, clear andlogic translation should be adopted; through analyzing the different role in the process,it is found that there are different roles during software localization translation, such asthe initiator and commissioner, the translator, the source-text producer, the target-textreceiver, as well as the target-text user, and different role have different purpose andintentions. Among the roles, the translator is the main performer of a translation action, and what an translator should pay attention to is the intentions and purposes of theproducer of the source text, and the purpose and requirement of the target users of thetext should be also considered to properly conduct translation action; the compile ofTranslation Brief can certain the schedule of translation, and the purpose of the targettext as well as the background of the users’ background which is helpful to performlocalization translation. Moreover, diction, amplification, omission, restruction andtransplantation can be applied to achieve the requirement of Skopos Rule, CoherenceRule and Fidelity Rule.It is true that there are obvious guiding effects of the functional translationtheory on the SPS localization translation, however, it is only a general orientationgiven to assist the translator. Moreover, due to the default of the SPS source text, theoperative of it has not been mentioned, which should be supplemented in the followingresearch.
