Interpreting Strategies Of Chinese-specific Expressions In Government Press Conference From Interpretive Theory Perspective

Chinese-specific expression refers to phrases with China’s unique cultural connotation with five thousands of years. It can be seen from all fields in the politics, economy, culture and social activities, and its emergence is the result of China’s social development and progress. Meanwhile, with China’s reform and opening-up and economical development, there are more demands in conference interpreting. As part of translation, interpreting has attracted more and more scholars and interpreters devoting themselves to the research of this field, in which conference interpreting is always the focus. Because of the rising of China’s international status, Chinese leaders participate in various influential international conferences more frequently than before, and make more speeches in such conferences (especially in government press conferences). In their speeches, Chinese-specific expressions are used more frequently than ever as well. Nevertheless, it is difficult to find equivalent expressions in English. For one reason, it is because Chinese and English belong to different language systems and possess their own grammar and structure; for another reason, it is because of the distinctions of cultural background and thinking patterns between two cultures. Therefore, to find and adapt proper interpreting strategy becomes particularly necessary for interpreters under the circumstance of time-precious conference interpreting.This thesis is written based on the "sense" unit and the Triangular Model proposed by Seleskovitch under the guidance of Interpretive Theory. According to the three stages in interpreting process, it puts sense re-expression for the final goal of interpreting and analyzes different kinds of the Chinese-specific expressions in Chinese government press conference interpreting, which concludes relative interpreting strategies in order to help interpreters increase their accuracy and efficiency in interpreting.During the stage of comprehension and deverbalization, interpreter processes the source language in an internal way. S/he should prepare for the conference subject in advance, activate the existing cognitive knowledge and combine them with the context in order to grasp the sense of the source language by the help of her/his accumulation of Chinese literature knowledge, While at the third stage of re-expression, because of the variety and wide range of Chinese-specific expressions, the author concludes and divides the interpreting strategies into five types by analyzing a great number of examples, which are equivalency, compression, explanation, sentence restructuring and free translation.In the part of introduction, the author makes literature review of study on interpreting and its development at home and abroad. Chapter One introduces linguistic and interpreting features of press conferences, criteria for interpreting quality in press conferences. Chapter Two gives a brief introduction to Chinese-specific expressions and analyzes its interpreting difficulties in press conference from two different aspects. Chapter Three introduces the development of Interpretive Theory and its main viewpoints. It also points out the significance and necessity to use this theory in press conference interpreting. Chapter Four analyzes Chinese government press conferences in recent years. It also analyzes strategies which could use in the three procedures of interpreting under the guidance of Interpretive Theory. At the end, it gives possible solutions to help interpreters in dealing with Chinese-specific expressions in Chinese-English press conference interpreting. At the end of this thesis, it makes a conclusion towards the research result, points out problems and deficiency existing in it, and also emphasizes the importance of sense comprehension and re-expression in interpreting.
