China is the largest of the four countries with ancient civilizationand rich natural, historical and beautiful cultural landscapes. Since thereform and opening up, China has made large steps forward on the roadof tourism industry; especially after the successful holding of2008Olympic Games, China has attracted more foreign tourists. Tourismindustry, the sunrise industry, has brought an increasingly obvious“multiplier effect” with the development of China’s economy. Whenforeign tourists visit China, they tend to know the tourist attractions andtheir features by reading tourism materials. Therefore, the translation oftourist attractions and brochures becomes the focus of foreign tourists,and the quality of the translation will have a direct impact on theirunderstanding of China’s unique culture.Since the1970s, the emphasis of translation studies has been shiftedfrom linguistic equivalence to functional equivalence, and translationstudies have been done under cultural background. In domestic andwestern translation studies, many translators have paid much attention tocultural impact on translation. Moreover, studies on the relationshipbetween culture, language and translation have been increased since the1980s. However, different translators have different ideas about cultural translation strategies.Under the background of globalization, studies on culturaltranslation strategies have become more and more important. This thesisaims to find some proper cultural translation strategies through thetranslation of tourist public materials in view of functionalism, especiallySkopostheorie. By reading functionalism we know that the factors, suchas the purpose of translation, the functions of a text, the cultural situationswhere the target text is received, etc, are all playing a leading role intranslation. Therefore, functionalism is feasible and effective in culturaltranslation. Finally, the paper reaches conclusions that amplification,omission, literal translation, diction, rewriting and paraphrase are propercultural translation strategies.
