Chinese Calligraphy, one of the most representative Chinese art, is of great significance in introducing Chinese culture to the world. However, recent research on calligraphy teaching in both domestic and foreign environment is still lagging behind. Proportion of related thesis in the study of teaching Chinese as a foreign language is still low. Studying Calligraphy Teaching in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (CTTCFL)will play a certain role in laying the foundation for the Chinese characters and culture teaching. Furthermore, the exploration of Chinese calligraphy curriculum may provide ideas and suggestion to CTTCFL. Initially, the studying in this area may promote the inner research of the Chinese character teaching, on the other hand, promote cultural communication. This thesis first explain the importance of CTTCFL in theory. Chinese character is a language recording symbol which belongs to the pictographic ideogram system. The characteristics of it,physical visibility and specific image beyond imagery, stimulate the characters teaching which make us have an eye on the calligraphy teaching and propose methods on the basis of deficiency. The lack of attention of CTTCFL raises tons of problems. Though differs in the lesson settings when compared to the Foreign Language teaching, calligraphy teaching can provide much help to the foreign students. So in this thesis. we will discuss the difference and connections between CTTCFL and other courses in order to put forward improvement methods. Foreigners are the teaching object in calligraphy teaching while general domestic calligraphy teaching are designed against the natives, so certainly there will be some differences in terms of teaching methods, teaching content, etc. This thesis study calligraphy teaching both towards natives and nonnatives and find out their difference and connections, which suggest improvements of foreign calligraphy teaching strategies. Then we analyze the causes and problems of teaching calligraphy to the status quo, try to propose appropriate solutions. CTTCFL stays in a chaotic situation and preliminary analysis found no corresponding unified curriculum is the main problem. This article will propose appropriate improvement strategies based on the related issues of CTTCFL courses set, including the teaching objectives, teaching content and teaching methods. In addition, in the classroom teaching process, we noticed there is a big difference between students from Chinese cultural circle and non-Chinese cultural circle in mastering Chinese character strokes, structure and other aspects. Therefore, the author collected and analyzed students works from class, midterm and final exam then compare the calligraphy problems appearing in learning from the students of different cultural backgrounds before giving solutions. Conclusions in the thesis is based on the study of literature and the author’s teaching experience, foreign calligraphy teaching is not equivalent to traditional calligraphy teaching, foreign calligraphy teaching has its particularity in all teaching sections such as teaching purpose, teaching methods, curriculum design, materials selection and training of teachers. These are due to the different teaching objects which calls for "individualized" in teaching that is conducting calligraphy teaching according to Chinese level and background knowledge of learners from different culture and establish content in line with their stage of Chinese learning in order to assist language teaching.
