A Study On Translation Techniques In EST

Nowadays, with the development of economy,, the enlargement of foreign exchange with the outside world,the advancement of science technology and globalization, the importance of transition in technology information has increasingly become apparent,especially in the improvement of national economic development and comprehensive national strength,which is not only importance reference to leaders’ decision-making,main driven source of national economic development,potential driven force of enterprises,but the key to success or failure of scientific research.English is the most common language used by people in the world,except Chinese.what’s more, it’s the most influential language in the world.Due to advanced scientific technology,the data of English for Science and Technology(EST) is much more extensive than those in China,which makes translating these data more and more important. Therefore,mastering its features and its special translation criteria,adopting corresponding translation techniques and strategies are of great importance to translation practice.The thesis mainly discusses EST’s translation from English to Chinese,with special reference to examples selected from those translating texts on ship’s design and students’book on nautical English.The thesis consists of four parts.The first part mainly focuses on its research background,research significance and its constructure.The second part presents EST’s characteristics from the perspective of vocabulary,sentence structure and expressed forms, meanwhile, it also introduces its translation criteria, namely, faithful-ness and standardization,smoothness and understandability, conciseness and clearness.The third part elaborates on the use of amplification,omission and shift of perspective in detail in ship English texts.The last part sums the whole paper up,predicating that the practicability of these three translation techniques in guiding our translation practice and EST’s translation plays more and more important role in the future.
