This is a translation report on Generation on a Tightrope：A Portrait ofToday’s College Students, of which preface and Chapter2“Academics” is thesource text. With a large survey of contemporary American college students andstudent affairs practitioners from colleges, the book draws a portrait of Americancollege students. The preface briefly explains how different the present Americancollege students are from previous generations from different angles, offering ageneral understanding of the main points of the book. Focused on academics,Chapter2discusses issues like students’ goals for college, teacher-studentrelationship, academic attitudes, majors, curricular, scores and student management.The whole report is divided into four parts: Part One is the translation projectdescription, including project background, objectives and significance. Part Two isthe background of the source text, including introduction to the author, introductionto the book, and the main contents and language features of the source text. PartThree is about translation difficulties and methods, containing translation aids,translation theory, translation difficulties and methods. The difficulties lie in thetranslation of the names of institutions and majors, the creative usage of certainwords as well as large amounts of long sentences. The theory used in this report isthe Communicative Translation by Peter Newmark. The methods include recasting,splitting, conversion and so on. Part Four concludes with the lessons,enlightenment and unsolved problems in the translation project.
