A Cognitive Translatology Approach To Consecutive Interpreting In Press Conference

This thesis is a case study of the consecutive interpreting in the NPC and CPPCC Sessions’Press Conference hosted by Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in2013. Interpreting activity has a long history, but not until the early20th century did the professionalization of consecutive interpreting start. Since then, scholars began to study consecutive interpreting from different perspectives, and their studies focused on the consecutive interpretation process. Cognitive Translatology takes the mode of translation processing, translation strategies, translation unit, translation abilities, translation acquisitions, translator’s expertise and their cognitive efforts as the objective of the research. All these factors play important roles in the translation process. For these reasons, this thesis takes the approach of Cognitive Translotology to study the translation principles and features of consecutive interpreting in press conference.Press conference is a special interpreting environment, and the related studies on press conference in recent years have gradually increased. Based on different perspectives, scholars have already made many important discoveries. However, there are still issues that need to be discussed, such as the best view of research perspective, particularities of consecutive interpreting in press conference and suitable translation strategies for consecutive interpreting. The present study is devoted to the following questions:First, can Cognitive Translatology be applied to studying consecutive interpreting in press conference in a broader way? Second, which aspects should be taken into account in the analysis of the particularity of consecutive interpreting in press conference? Third, how to use the translation principles to analyze consecutive interpreting in press conference from the view of cognitive translatology?This thesis adopts Case Analysis Method and Descriptive Study Method to analyze the case of NPC and CPPCC Sessions’Press Conference by Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi. By using Cognitive Translatology, we can analyze the process of consecutive interpreting in press conference more comprehensively. This thesis has proved that Cognitive Translatology can be the scientific guidance on consecutive interpreting in press conferences. Furthermore, from the level of lexicon, phrase and sentence, Cognitive Translatology can be applied to analyze the particularities of consecutive interpreting in press conference, such as immediate, political and limited. Lastly, this thesis studies the consecutive interpreting under the guidance of Two Worlds of Translation and Harmonious Translation principles.
