The Difficulties And Strategies Of Language Switch In E-C Interpretation

As the economic ties between China and foreign countries are deepened, the culturalcommunication gets increasingly closed. Not only Chinese culture are introduced abroad,but also advanced foreign science and technology as well as culture and ideas aredrawing great attention of the Chinese public. TED Conference provides such a platformfor sharing ideas that it becomes more and more popular. Interpreting these speeches canbroaden the interpreters’ views as well as improve their practical skills for interpreting inauthentic English. Furthermore, if the interpreters offer high-quality interpretation, Chineseaudience could understand the spirits contained in these speeches more accurately.Sticking to the principle of faithfulness is essential in practical interpretation.However the interpreters could face many difficulties of language switch due to differencesof the two cultures and language patterns, which are hard to tackle. Based on theinterpretive theory of France, this thesis centers around expressing contextual meaningsand has an exploration into the three stages of interpretation; that is, understanding thespeeches, getting rid of the words and expressing the meanings in interpreters’ own words.Apart from expressing communicative meanings, the interpretation should be in parallelwith the speech in style.Conducting a case study of Andrew Soloman’s two speeches in TED Conference withreference to the ideas of the interpretive theory of France and the interpreter’s experience,the author adheres to the deverbalization according to different contexts and gives asummary of the strategies of dealing with the difficulties of language switch in hope ofguiding the practice in the future.
