Research On Genetically Modified Foods Labeling System In China

With the development of the biotechnology, genetically modifiedfoods appear in people’s lives increasingly. However, the scientific circle hasnot yet drawn a conclusion about its quality security, the uncertainty of itsquality security has brought a dilemma of the legal regulation of thegenetically modified foods. Meeting the need of people concerning about foodsecurity, labeling system serves as one of the most important means of foodsecurity supervision around the word. Aimed at the legal system forgenetically modified food labeling and based on the introduction of thechanges of the current labeling rules and regulations concerning geneticallymodified food, the paper introduces rules and regulations about geneticallymodified food labeling in current situation and draws the conclusion of thecurrent labeling system. A comparative study of labeling system of the UnitedStates, the European Union, as well as China is conducted in this paper, whichanalyzes the main reasons why different countries adopt different labelingsystems and demonstrates the necessity of mandatory labeling of geneticallymodified foods in China. At last, this paper analyzes the main problems inlabeling system of genetically modified food, and thus putting forwardsuggestions of genetically modified food labeling system: enrich the labelingregulation; strengthening the legal supervision of the food labeling; andinviting heavier liability of the breach of food labeling.
