As an essential part of the primary school Chinese textbooks, the exercising system has multiple purposes. Exercising can help new knowledge be internalized and facilitate the pupils’ competence in Chinese, in which way the pupils’ language cultivated manners comprehensive development are promoted. Here I study the role of the exercising system in the primary school Chinese textbooks.A comparative study provides a platform for understanding the textbook compliment in different educational backgrounds. As the Chinese nation, people in Mainland China and Hong Kong have common ancestry, speak the same language, and have the same cultural deposits. The exercising systems in the Chinese textbooks have numerous similarities as well as many differences due to the history. Here the author selected the compulsory education curriculum standard primary school Chinese experiment textbook Chinese published by People’s Education Press and the primary school Chinese textbook Chinese Language published by New Asia Press, Hong Kong to explore the writing characteristics of the exercising systems in these two versions through a comparative study expecting to provide a reference for the writing of the exercising system for PEP version primary school Chinese textbooks and the reform of primary school Chinese curriculum in Mainland China.This thesis contains four parts.Chapter I Introduction describes the background and the motivation for the current study, clarifies the study object and methods, and explains the concepts of Chinese teaching material, Chinese textbook, and the exercising system.Chapter Ⅱ includes the theoretical foundation of the study. This thesis employs Vygotsky’s theory of "zone of proximal development", Constmctivism Learning Theory, and the writing philosophy of programmatic documents for Chinese curriculum in Mainland China and Hong Kong to build up the study framework. The introduction to the above theories and their enlightenment for the exercising system lay a theoretical foundation for further study below.Chapter Ⅲ is the main part of the thesis. On the basis of the theoretical foundation in Chapter II, in this chapter I compared the exercising systems between the PEP version and New Asia Press version primary school Chinese textbooks in aspects of form and content, quantity, type, and illustration.Chapter Ⅳ offers suggestions for the writing of the exercising system for the PEP version primary school Chinese textbooks. Based on the comparison and analysis in the previous chapters, suggestions were put forward for the writing of the exercising system for the PEP version primary school Chinese textbooks:Set up richer and more imaginable situation to enhance learning and also increase the openness of the exercise resources; Increase the variability of the questions so as to improve the pupils’ abilities in Chinese studying and communication in a coordinated manner. Take good consideration of the pupils’physical and psychological development so that they are enlightened and are more capable of handling the exercises.
