Vocabulary teaching is an important aspect of language teaching in senior high schools. A great number of experts from home and abroad have done profound researches and come up with a lot of modern educational theories. As is known to all, English plays a very important role in National College Entrance Examination and vocabulary is the basis of English learning. Therefore, English teachers attach great importance to it, for they know if there is a lack of vocabulary, other language abilities cannot be improved. However, in practical teaching, due to teachers’different teaching concepts and strategies as well as various learning environment around students, there are still many unsatisfactory aspects:1. boring vocabulary lessons could not encourage students to learn actively;2. teaching activities are not designed according to students’interest so that students are unwilling to participate;3. teacher-centered teaching methods only allow students to take notes passively and remember words mechanically. As a result, they will lose interest in learning English.The research applied participatory mode in high school English vocabulary teaching in order to stimulate students’learning interest and eventually to improve their academic records. Students from two parallel classes in Grade one were chosen to take part in the experiment. Class7was chosen as the experimental class and Class8as the control class. The author mainly carried out one questionnaire twice to see the change of students’ attitude before and after the experiment; a pretest and posttcst were carried out to test the effect after the application of participatory teaching mode. The results half a year later show that:l.the participatory approach can be conducted in vocabulary teaching in middle school English class.2. After the application of participatory teaching mode, students are interested in vocabulary teaching, can remember words they have learned better and thus improve their academic records.
