The curriculum reform of current higher vocational education exists for instant success, excessive attention to professional courses and practical teaching and little attention to public basic teaching, which is against the concept of all-round development of higher vocational education and sustainable development of the people. Through the research on the construction and reform of public basic courses, we can further reveal the important role of public basic courses in higher vocational education talents training and look for ideas and measures to reform them further in order to promote the public basic course reform better.This study mainly adopts surveys (interviews), experience summary and literature analysis. First of all, the author makes a detailed analysis on a large number of domestic and foreign relevant research literature, and thus has more detailed and profound knowledge of the public basic courses in our higher vocational education status. Then, the author carries out a questionnaire survey and interviews to have a holistic grasp on the implementation situation of higher vocational public course reform in our country and puts forward thinking solutions and specific measures.The article is divided into four parts. The first part is the introduction to the research background and the current reform and development of public basic course. The second mainly defines several core concepts related to the "Curriculum","Vocational Education" and "public basic course", expounds the theoretical foundation of public basic course construction and reform and reviews the brief history of the curriculum construction and public basic course reform in our country. Through the investigation and interview of public courses in the author’s school, the author illustrates the current status of public vocational basic course and the causes of it. The third part discusses the course orientation of public basic courses in higher vocational colleges and puts forward the curriculum goal, content, structure, knowledge system and quality evaluation methods. The fourth mainly expounds the basic thought of public basic course reform and the strategy of ability standard, and then puts forward specific reform measures.In a word, the reform of public basic courses in higher vocational education should embody the thought of ability standard, permeates occupation accomplishment training, and provides services in professional teaching needs and students’ sustainable development. As long as we change "subject standard" into "ability standard", they can play a role in the whole talent system of higher vocational education and eventually reach the goal of serving in cultivating talents of higher vocational education.
