The inheritance and development of the human world is inseparable from the education,and teaching activities of teachers are inseparable with the education activities. So Teachersplay an important role in the education and even in the whole world. But we must to ask somequestions: Who is a teacher?What’s the status of teachers in society? If you want to be ateacher should have what conditions?……We have to understand the status of teachers if wewant to know these problems. The study on the change of the status of teachers is also animportant part of the history of the development of teachers’ occupation study.This paper attempts to start from the change of the status of teachers in western to analysisthe development process of the status of teachers in order to understand the characteristics ofdifferent stages of western teacher in occupation of development and analyzed the reasons forthese characteristics.The study about the the status of western teachers across thousands of years, analysis thechanges of the status of western teachers should make the teaching activity of teachers andsocial status as a main point of discussion to know the characteristics of the teachers’ status.This paper use the historical research method, literature research method and comparativeresearch method, analysis of change of the status of teachers according to the historical facts.The article is divided into three parts, each part was divided into several parts.The first part discusses of the contents about thousands of years, from the noninstitutionalized education stage has been to the Middle Ages to the priest as a teacher. Thestatus of teachers according to the historical stage can be divided into Seniors as teachers--theSophists and the Thinker as teachers--the Priest teachers three parts. Although they are calledteachers in this part but in fact this period of teachers are not professional teachers, they areengaged in other jobs when they act as teachers. The teacher’s personal prestige are strongappeal to students.The second part introduces the development of teacher professionalization. From the Renaissance the Secular teachers appeared and grow slowly out of the church forces. Afterseveral times of reform and revolution, the church forces are gradually weakened, the view ofuniversal primary education is accepted by more and more countries. A lot of elementaryeducation teachers are needed and it is very easy to become a teacher, so A lot of ordinarypeople as a primary school teachers make the teachers’ status badly even they can’t survive relyon the salary. On the other hand, the "double-track" education in the West make onlyaristocratic family’s children have the ability to accept secondary education and highereducation, their teacher are elite from aristocratic family who have an high social status.The third part is the status of teachers in period of the teachers’ professionalism. Mainintroduction is after the normal education appears, teacher occupation to slowly becometeachers engaged in education and teaching professional identity, from the representatives of thewestern countries-Britain, Germany and France respectively introduced their process ofteachers’ professionalization of teacher status and specific provisions. Study the status ofwestern teacher is not only in the education but also in the whole society. And it is not only onekind of people as a teacher in a period, there are must be many people of different identities toas teachers. But study the status of western teacher should start from the most representative ofthe teachers’ status otherwise it will be redundant.
