With the rapid development of the times and the upgrading of science and technology, as well as the coming of the age of "Information Ocean", autonomous learning has become not only an important part of the curriculum reform of basic education, but also a general trend of the development of the world curriculum reform. Although the teaching of autonomous learning has been carried out for nearly ten years, teachers, parents and students are more inclined to the exam-orientated education system which can greatly improve the exam results because of the influence of the college entrance examination. At the same time, some teachers hope to realize autonomous learning through their teaching practice. However, there is no ready-made experience, methods or ways, they often give up halfway. In China, the theoretical research of the teaching of autonomous learning started late. It leads to many problems in the teaching practice. There is still a long way to go. Many Chinese scholars and experts such as Yu Wensen and Cheng Xiaotang are trying their best to form a universal theory and scheme. They put forward many different views and theories, and hope that they can prove the feasibility of these theories and ideas through the teaching practice. In this paper, the concept of autonomous learning is defined through the analysis of the literature; and through contrast and analysis, the author sums up the research of autonomous learning at home and abroad. The ability of autonomous learning will be analyzed using methods such as questionnaire survey and interview; and the problems existing in students’ autonomous learning will found. Students’ autonomous learning ability will be cultivated through action research. Based on teaching practice and the ways, strategies and methods of trying to develop junior high school mathematics students’ ability, the author puts forward three measures to solve the problems:first, stimulating the interest in autonomous learning; second, paying attention to the guidance of learning methods; third, training students’ ability of reflection and strengthening the self monitoring ability.
