The continuous emergence of new media promotes the coming of media convergence, andvice versa. Media convergence has greatly affected our study, life and work, especially on themedia industry. Media talents needed by the industry mainly come from media universities.Therefore, the converging media places a new challenge for the media education in universities.It is necessary for the traditional media education to make some adjustment under the mediaconvergence. Nowadays, many media universities have reformed their educational ideas, fieldsof study, as well as their course management system. This work focuses on the educationalsituation in the local media universities and the problems still exiting in their education. Wechoose five media universities in Shandong as sample.The development and current situation in domestic and abroad media education is studied inthis work. Firstly, by learning about educational ideas, faculty and staff, fields of study, coursemanagement, etc. in media universities abroad (for example, University of Missouri, Universityof Victoria, University of Miami, University of Southern California, etc.), the advantages anddisadvantages in media education abroad is discussed. Secondly, we put our emphasis on thecurrent situation of media education and its development in well-known media universities inChina. We collect our data by searching the official website of those five universities,interviewing the faculties and searching the literature of study on this topic. The main problemsexisting in the current domestic median education are shown and some strategies are proposed tosolve these problems.There are six sections in this paper: section one is the introduction. The researchbackground, targets, methods, threads, and previous studies are reviewed in this part. Section twointroduces media convergence and the new requirements in media education, including thedefinition of new media, the form of media in the modern society, the connotation, origin anddevelopment of media convergence, and the requirements in media talents. Section three is aninvestigation on educational situation in the five local media universities. This investigation iscarried out in the aspects of enrollment numbers, faculty and staff, fields of study, coursemanagement, internships, as well as employment orientation. In section four, we study theeducational problems in local universities, mainly from cultivation programs and coursesmanagement, faculty and media experiences, teaching experiments and professional skills,practical teaching and internship environment. Aiming to the investigation results mentionedabove, we propose ideas about media education revolution and strategies on talents cultivation.Section six is conclusion and discussion.
