With the rapid development of economic globalization and the deepeninginternational division of labor, motorcycle industry is increasingly showingcharacteristics of globalization. The world’s leading motorcycle manufacturers havetheir value chain extend to the whole world to form the global motorcycle industryvalue chain. Due to the nature of the motorcycle industry,many places often developthe local motorcycle industry with the model of industrial clusters,focus on the corecompetitiveness in the motorcycle industry value chain based on the comparativeadvantage.After years of development, the motorcycle industry is becoming a traditionalpillar industry in Chongqing, which makes a great contribution to the economicdevelopment and stimulating employment in Chongqing as well as the western region.But at the same time, the fact that Chongqing motorcycle industry has less competitiveis placed in front of people, especially upstream R&D and innovation and downstreambrands, marketing channels. Therefore, faced with increasingly fierce marketenvironment at home and abroad, how to resolve the Chongqing motorcycle industrycluster upgrading problem from the point of view of the global value chain research isof great significance.On the basis of introducing the global and China’s motorcycle industrydevelopment, this paper has made Chongqing motorcycle industry as the researchobject, value chain as a research tool, combines regional economics, industrialeconomics, management and related theory, uses the method of combining theoreticalinterpretation and case studies to study the Chongqing motorcycle industry clusterupgrading, analyses the current development of Chongqing motorcycle industry clustervalue chain and the plight of the middle and lower reaches of the motorcycle industryvalue chain, especially the backwardness of the upstream R&D and innovation anddownstream brand and marketing channels is becoming the main factor of restrictingthe Chongqing motorcycle industry cluster upgrading. Based on the above analysis,this paper concludes that Chongqing motorcycle industry cluster’s position in theglobal value chain and gives the Chongqing Motorcycle cluster upgrading path that ofembedding in the global value chain to complete the upgrading of industrial processesand product upgrades, rising along the global value chains to complete the featureupgrading, expanding to the relevant industries to complete the chain upgrading. Then, the paper gives some suggestions from the perspective of government and enterprise.Finally, this paper uses Chongqing Zongshen Group as a specific case to provide someexperience to Chongqing motorcycle industry cluster upgrading.
