Urban roads are not only the emphasis part of urban traffic system but also the importantbasis implement for city economy development and residents living. With the rapiddevelopment of the city, the guidance and the promoter action of traffic engineering design forthe development of urban road have been noted gradually. Our urban road planning pays moreattention to road engineering rather than traffic engineering design. Thus, there exist someissues in traffic engineering design, such as incomplete guidance information system, lack ofattention to the design of slow traffic system, faulty public transit transfer system and lack ofcoordination and convergence of different modes of transportation’s design. Thus trafficengineering design at present can’t meet the trip demand of urban residents that resulting inroad traffic are not fully functional. Urban traffic demand can be reflected more correctly bystudy on resident trip characteristics. Transportation planning makes macroeconomic analysisfor traffic demand from land utilization type, but in order to better meet the trip demand ofresidents, traffic demand needs microcosmic traffic engineering design. Meanwhile, choosingmethods of traffic engineering design to solving traffic problems can’t do without analyzingtrip characteristics. The paper is divided into two parts of theoretical research and empirical research;Logical train will follow the research module of ‘theoretical analysis-current situation andissues-countermeasure proposal’.First of all, the paper proposes that travel characteristics can provide decision-makingbasis for traffic engineering design and deeply analyzes the features and influence factors oftrip purpose, trip distribution, trip intensity and travel mode. In order to acquire gist for trafficengineering design, trip demand is grasped thoroughly by accurately analyzing the tripcharacteristics of urban residents.Secondly, the condition of different traffic systems is studied from angle of travelbehavior. Travel characteristics of slow traffic (including pedestrian traffic and bicycle traffic),conventional public transport and vehicle traffic are analyzed to acquired proper trip rule which is generated in different trip modes. Meanwhile, the influence of different tripcharacteristics for traffic engineering design is summarized to achieve adaptation of roadsupply and demand in order to better supply gist for traffic engineering design. And then traffic engineering design based on trip characteristics is proposed. For theproblem existing in the traffic engineering design is obtained by analyzing trip characteristics. The detail design focuses on slow traffic, vehicle traffic and conventional public transport, and pays more attention to coordination and convergence of different transportation modes inorder to reach best traffic benefit. Finally, starting from the actual problem, the road traffic engineering design ofGuangzhou University City is taken as an empirical research. The traffic engineering design isproposed accordingly by measuring trip data and analyzing traffic status, trip characteristicsand problems existing in traffic engineering design. The paper is studied on the traffic engineering design of urban road. By analyzing tripcharacteristics to accurately obtain trip demand, traffic engineering design based on tripcharacteristics is proposed in order to make road traffic system meeting trip demand, reduceurban traffic pressure and make urban traffic function working best. The paper can offertheoretical basis and technical reference for traffic engineering design by analyzing theproblem existing in Guangzhou University City.
