The reconstruction of schools is the main task after the Wenchuan Earthquake. It isalso the focus of the whole society. As the reconstruction program proceeded quickly, all the schools were rebuilt and put into use in August2012. Do these new schoolsoperate well thereafter? Do they actually satisfy the requirements of the primary schoolkids who had experienced a horrible disaster both physically and mentally? Due to thelarge quantity of destruction and limited time, a lot of projects didn’t involve sufficientinvestigation before construction, biased from the standards during construction, andlack of effective evaluation of the operation after construction. This article takes severalof the hardest damaged areas from the Wenchuan Earthquake and analyzes in depth theenvironment of the rebuilding process. Based on the research and the post occupancyevaluation, combined with the evaluation of the designing process from architects, itconcludes the differences and problems of the both design and use of theseschools, extracts the revelation for design from successful exploration of the case study, research on appropriate strategies, offers some effective design recommendations for thefuture reconstruction of schools, helps architects develop more rational and efficientdesign. This article complies with the basic research ideas, and is consisted of five parts.Part one is introduction. In this part, the research background, the goal of research, the significance of the research and the main content and methods of the research isdiscussed. The previous research on reconstruction and post occupancy evaluation ofschool and the development on the related research is also included. In part two, the content and plan of the research is made. It gives data collectedfrom the actual research and interviews on post occupancy evaluation of reconstructedschools and concludes the differences of these schools, carries out the establishment ofthe questionnaire for the later use of scientific and systematic evaluation system andre-setting of the research. The third part is the main part of this article. It includes chapter3and4.In chapter3, the meaning and necessity of the post occupancy evaluation in the reconstruction isdiscussed. It introduces the implementation of thepost occupancy evaluation system inspecific cases—The second primary school of Wenchuan post occupancy evaluationand the Heihuxiang primary school of Maoxian post occupancy evaluation. It elaborated on field research, interviews, questionnaires and interviews with the main architects.Through data analysis and scientific support, it concludes the key issues ofreconstruction and school design. This article also provides a scientific basis andpractical support for the proposed design strategy. The fourth chapter is the core contentof this paper, through the reconstruction of the school’s field research, users openinterviews and questionnaires, as well as the evaluation of the design process, theinterview of architects, it raises the theme of design strategy for school reconstructionaccording to the key issues. The forth part is analyzing a design case. In this part, based on the result of theresearch, the application of the strategy of school reconstruction is described in details.Theconclusion, the innovation of using the postoccupancy evaluation of thereconstructed schools provides valuable experience, recommendations for the future ofsimilar design strategies and prospects for future research.
