It is well known that the substations automation technology and the microcomputer protection have improved a lot. And due to this, the functions and performance of the network automation system has developed greatly. Due to the present condition that there is no unified communication protocol of microcomputer protection device, substations automation system and fault recorder, the information generated increases greatly, leading to low efficiency.This paper mainly deals with several difficulties of establishing a substation automation system with high quality, such as the difference of physical interface and the incongruence of data communication protocol, and the difficulty of commissioning maintenance. The research significance of the relay protection and fault information subsystem are studied. And then the subsystem definition and basic functions and ARM processor are described. Based on the analysis of modular design, architecture design, and the choice of platform, the subsystem is put forward. At last, the hardware and software real application is discussed.
