Big mountain cities play an important role in China’s city construction system, many of them are located in the western area, such as Chongqing, Lanzhou, Panzhihua city and etc. The characteristics of big mountain cities are as follows: the topography is complex, the city construction land is tight, the population density is high. These features not only brought complexity to the planning and construction of the particular urban road traffic systems, but also made the transportation of residents from mountain cities different to residents from plain cities. Therefore, this paper based on the urban form and road network planning, morphology and characteristics of mountain cities, aims to conclude different effects of different factors made on big mountain city residents’ choices of transportation by analyzing these choices, in order to provide appropriate traffic planning countermeasures for big mountain cities, to optimize the transportation structure of big mountain cities, which has significant theoretical and practical meaning.Firstly, this paper systematically analyzed the residents’ travel characteristics of mountain cities, road network morphology and public transport facilities in morphological characteristics, then it summarized these three external influences of big mountain city residents’ choices and came to the different transportation between residents from mountain cities and residents from plain cities. Secondly, this paper analyzed the influence factors of the travel mode, the non motorized travel mode, the travel mode of the motor vehicle, the way of the travel of the vehicle, and the way of the public transportation. The interaction of the range of factors and the choice of travel mode have been analyzed as well, one of the results came to the 15 factors of the choice of the travel mode of big mountain city residents, and made the initial theoretical judgment on the factors of travel mode choice. Then on the basis of residential property, residential location, travel purpose, travel time, travel mode etc. This paper established the big mountain city residents’ choices of transportation structural equation model(SEM), and derived the interaction relations between the travel attribute variables and the characteristics of mountain cities network on travel mode correlation effects, then resulted in the role of various factors in residents travel mode choice effect calculation method, by pointing to the various factors on travel mode choice of interaction relationship. Lastly, the paper took the residents trip behavior of Chongqing as an example, based on the actual survey of residents’ trip parameters, applied analyzed the established SEM. Main results of this paper are shown as following: the satisfaction of walking road network is positively related to the travel mode, and negatively related to the travel of non-motorized vehicles; Relationship between the satisfaction of the non-motorized road network and the choice of the traffic way is not obvious; Urban road network density and electric / auxiliary / bicycles, cars, motorcycles and other modes of travel were positively correlated, walking and bus trip was negatively correlated; The non linear coefficient and the average longitudinal slope of the road network were positively correlated with the traffic mode of the road, and the travel style of the motorcycle was negatively correlated with the travel mode of the motorcycle. Results of this study made a significant contribution for analyzing of mountain city residents’ transportation mode choice and summing up the characteristics of the hilly city resident trip mode factors. It also can be used to guide the mountain city traffic network construction, guide mountain city residents reasonably choose transportation modes, and to establish a more reasonable and effective travel mode structure for residents in big mountain cities, which has a certain practical guidance effect.
