Research On AIS And Its Indicating Method In Notices To Mariners And Charts On Changjiangkou Waters Of East China Sea

AIS technique grows mature due to the progress of science and the development of hardware and software. Currently, coastal AIS station network covering Chinese coastal sea areas and high level channels within inner waters has been established in China. Because of the wide use of AIS, the efficiency and safety of vessel traffics have been improved drastically.As the symbol of AIS is not prescribed in Symbols and Abbreviations Used in Chinese Charts, different chart producers present AIS with various symbols. As for Notices to Mariners, the methods of AIS presentation are inconsistent either. As a result, inconvenience and inefficiency rise in the production and use of charts.To solve the problem of inconsistence, the thesis is devoted to a thorough analysis of the mechanism, working mode, types, function and origin of AIS. The present author takes Changjiang Kou area as a sample in this thesis. Changjiang Kou, like a bugle in its shape, lies between Changjiangkou Beijiao and Nanhui Zui, with the widest part 48.6nm. Aids to navigations are complete in this area, including the AIS equipped on Changjiangkou Light Vessel, Jiuduan Light Vessel and Nancao Light Vessel, those are conspicuous leading marks for vessels entering or leaving Changjiang Kou. With an investigation of the literature about navigational marks of ITU, IMO, IALA and cartography, in combination with practice in cartography, symbols and chart production, the present author puts forward a series of new methods for AIS presentation in Notices to Mariners and charts and also designs AIS symbol database based on software Microstation.The author maintains that the standardization of AIS symbols in current chart production system is most essential and practical.The author maintains that the standardization of AIS symbols in current chart production system is most essential and practical.The investigation of AIS in Changjiang Kou and the related presentation in this thesis provides a reference for the future standardization of AIS presentation in Notices to Mariners and charts.
