| In 2009,the National Grid issued the construction strategy related to the of smart grid, which regards network architecture, communications technology, intelligent control methods as the basis and the anchor point of the smart grid, it includes all aspects of the power system, its goal is to build a modern grid of different voltage levels.As a branch of the smart grid, smart distribution network’s role has become more and more prominent, to realize distribution automation is particularly important, as it greatly improves the reliability of power supply, reduces labor intensity and improves the operational effectiveness of the power system. Benxi City, as a developed city of Liaoning Province, has a high reliability requirements of the power supply, distribution automation in Benxi City has a great application background and space, to carry out the research about distribution automation within the Pingshan district has a great reference and guidance sense on other distribution automation of other districts.This article describes the research background and significance of the distribution automation,and it outlines the current development of distribution network automation in domestic and foreign region. Details of the basic concepts of distribution automation, system configuration, the main functions and automated distribution network supporting environment are also introduced, which forms a more extensive distribution network automation theoretical system.The status of the distribution network of Pingshan district were introduced, including geography,economy, the pressure line analysis, medium voltage equipment analysis, power supply analysis, the supply ability and the main problems.
