With the development and change of social, the traditional manual way of meter reading has been difficult to meet today’s needs. The application and promotion of remote meter reading system becomes particularly important. In this case, this thesis designs a remote meter reading system based on M-Bus. The system transmits data by M-Bus, self-organizing wireless network and GPRS and has the advantages of high meter reading rate and low cost. This thesis ascertains the overall design of system depending on actual needs. The system components divided into eight parts: end meter, collector, concentrator, server, bottom layer data channel, middle layer data channel, top layer data channel and data management platform. The bottom layer data channel uses M-Bus, middle layer data channel uses self-organizing network, top layer data channel uses GPRS and data management platform uses Web technology. Managers can log on to the system via the Internet for remote control. This thesis describes the hardware and software design details of the system. The collector consists of collecting module, wireless module, core board and power supply module. The main part of collecting module is M-Bus master circuit. The wireless main chip is Si4432. The microcontroller of core board is STM32F103 RE. The concentrator consists of wireless module, GPRS module, core board and power supply module. The main chip of GPRS module is SIM900 A. The core board of concentrator uses OK6410 embedded platform and runs on Linux. The server is IBM System X3630 M3. The heart of system software design is the design of M-Bus communication program and self-organizing network protocol. After testing, the system runs well and can read meter data reliably. The meter reading success rate is over 98%. Finally, this thesis points out the shortcomings of the system and proposes the ways of improvement of the system.
