As the area of per capita cultivated land is quite limited, and energy&resource consumption is becoming more and more serious as well as the environmental contamination, sustained development of economy and the steady progress of urbanization in China are facing severe challenges. Therefore, it is a key way to develop new wall material for protecting arable land and environment effectively, saving resources and improving the efficiency of resource utilization, promoting the transformation of the economic development patter, relieving the contradictions among development environment and natural resources, and enhancing the dynamism for sustainable development. Sintered hollow fly-ash bricks, made from the silty wasteland and industrial solid waste, are the conservation-oriented and environmental-friendly wall material with goodness of land saving, low energy consumption and environmental protection. In the energy-efficient, environment-friendly and soil-economical approach of new wall material, sintered hollow fly-ash bricks are suitable to be under study for further popularization and application.In this paper, compressive property, joint shear strength and performance under shear-compression loading of the sintered hollow fly-ash brickwork is under proof to explore its main failure characteristics and provide basic material mechanics property parameters for further study, popularization and application.(1) According to the compressive performance test results, the mean value of compressive strength is concluded. By comparing, it seems that the mean value is very similar to the calculation result of the code. Furthermore, the proposed characteristicvalue and design value based is calculated. On the basis of the experimental data, the expression of stress-strain relationship of sintered hollow fly-ash brick masonry is put forward. The modulus of elasticity and the recommended value of the Poisson’s ratio of this type of fly-ash brick masonry are given.(2) Based on the record of joint shear test, the average value of shear strength of sintered hollow fly-ash brick masonry is obtained as well as the relevant proposed characteristic value and design value.(3) By analyzing measured data under shear-compression loading, the correlation function expression is given upon the the correlation curve of shear-compression.Through the analysis of the shear strength and axial load ratio, piecewise shear-compression composite strength formula for the average value, the standard value and the design value of the sintered hollow fly-ash brick masonry are derived.
