Urban spatial expansion refers to the development and change of the scale and connotation of urban space to meet the needs of urban residents in the development of multi level physiological and psychological needs. which on the scale shows the expansion of the built-up area of the regional space, from the inside to the outside of the rural areas to promote, and in the connotation shows the adjustment of the internal structure of the city, the rejuvenation and succession of the scale, density and shape, the stretch from the ground to the air, underground. With the development of resources, resource-based cities which the leading industry is resources exploitation is rising. Due to the special dependence of resources and the single industrial structure, it has a unique form of spatial structure and evolution process. Daqing city is China’s largest oil production base and an important base of petroleum and chemical industry, is located in the northern farming pastoral region and Northeast China Transect, NECT. As a typical resource type city and regional conditions especially sensitive to the ecological environment, The spatial expansion of Daqing has its special characteristics. At the same time, Daqing as a new regional city in Heilongjiang Province, also shoulder the historical task of accelerating the process of industrialization and urbanization and improving the quality of life of the people, which makes the spatial expansion of its complexity. In addition, facing the trend of the shortage of resources at the turn of the century, Daqing city as typical resource exhausted cities in China and the northeast old industrial base focus on the transformation of the object, has a unique experience in how to explore the transformation of resource-based cities and seeking a way to achieve sustainable development with population, economy, society, resources and environment all in harmony, which can provide a guiding framework for building a harmonious relationship between human and land in other resource-based cities and cities in the ecologically vulnerable areas. This paper is on the basis of extensively absorbing the current international and domestic related research results, using remote sensing imaging technology, remote sensing information processing technology, geographic information system and spatial analysis technology as the means, with the original variety of spatial data(topographic map, land use planning, Over-all City Planning Map) for reference, combined with the theoretical support of economic geography, urban geography, architecture and other disciplines, and using research methods by combining qualitative and quantitative analysis, theory and empirical analysis, foreign advanced theory and domestic practice, case analysis and normative research methods. In this paper, we especially emphasize the existing advanced theory, research results closely combined with the characteristics of space development and the practical needs of resource-based cities. the purpose of which is to comprehensively analyze the spatial and temporal variation characteristics and systematically summarizes the dynamic mechanism of urban spatial expansion in Daqing city. In order to meaningfully put forward the optimized control measures from the technology, institution, policy and so on at the city level such as the ideal expansion mode, expansion direction, scale and time sequence of the expansion.Based on the empirical study of urban spatial expansion in Daqing, we can draw the following conclusions: Daqing city is China’s largest oil production base and regional conditions especially sensitive to the ecological environment. Coupled with the resource development and urban construction as China’s independent exploration of socialist industrialization and urbanization to seek a way to achieve sustainable development with economy, society and ecology all in harmony in different periods or stages of development by a variety of conditions and environmental constraints. Which determines the development and construction of the city is a process of continuous revision and improvement. Through the study of the urban spatial expansion of Daqing City also confirms this understanding. The expansion of urban space in Daqing City experiences four different models:point axis type and scattered point pattern of regional production complex mining area、 "Both sides" relatively centralized urban expansion mode、group type and belt type clustered city model under the two element management system(the central enterprises and local government)、multi core cluster city model. In which the strength of the expansion is a kind of process that after the first fast slow and then gradually accelerated, the full expansion. Affected by the terrain factor and the distribution and development of oil resources, the urban spatial system form was dispersed in the construction phase of the mining area. In order to ease the contradiction between oil production and urban construction, the government made a strategic choice "Get out of ’the road’, the construction of ’Both sides’ ".Coupled with the city transformation and industrial restructuring of Heilongjiang Province and the western regional center city construction, central gathering and radiation ability of Daqing is gradually strengthened. Its urban space after multiple nested filled is gradually evolving to compact layout, formed the pattern of today’s cluster City using new ’Dongfeng’ village and Ranghulu as the core.
