China is a country with thousands of years of agrarian civilization, while ancient villages are epitomes of such long history, and the basic component unit of society. The development of ancient villages bears the marks of history, and each of those who survive the process of development bears traditional culture, architectural art, and folks customs of it’s unique region. These ancient villages are precious material and culture heritages. Following the rapid development of tourism nowadays, ancient villages are attracting large amount of tourists. Many scholars are making in-depth study towards ancient villages, the meaning and value of ancient villages are being recognized by more and more visionaries. Meanwhile, many ancient villages are facing baptism from lacking adaptability towards fast-paced economy growth of modern society. In this thesis, I’m introducing psychology-related perception theory and spatial form theory into the study of ancient villages, in the aspect of tourist. Methods of field investigation and document retrieval are used in the study. In this thesis, I’ll bring up and discuss my theory on the following subjects:Types of spatial perception of ancient villages, which include direct perception, time/spatial perception and influence perception; Object elements of spatial perception, which include natural landscape, architecture, roads, and spatial nodes; The core aspects of ancient villages’spatial perception evaluation, which include aesthetic value, effect value, and affect value; And finally, the evaluation system of spatial perception, which includes characteristic, diversity, integrity, comfortableness, recognizability, uniqueness, and authenticity. The study subject of this thesis is Hongcun, which is among the earliest settlement regions voted as the most famous ancient villages.130 questionnaires are distributed during field investigation in Hongcun, and by data analysis on the questionnaires, following conclusion are made:1. Highest recognizable perception features are natural landscape and Huizhou Architecture schools, and the lowest perception features are roads and lanes.2.The spatial perception of characteristic, integrity, and authenticity are relatively higher in the aspects of evaluation.3. The spatial perception of comfortableness, recognizability, and uniqueness are relatively lower in the aspects of evaluation.Based on previous discussion, suggestions are concluded focusing on how to develop ancient villages in the aspect of enhancing spatial perception of tourists.I hope that analyzing methods, as well as studying aspect in this thesis can be of referential significance to future ancient villages studies, as well as to the development and protection work of ancient villages.
